Five Habits of Effective Executive Job Seekers

Five Habits of Effective Executive Job Seekers In the wake of working with a huge number of official employment searchers, certain examples have developed in regards to the acts of those that succeed. Here are a couple of I have witnessed.1. Follow up on all presentations. Shockingly, many employment searchers don't catch up on presentations made for their benefit. Regardless of whether you don't know it the individual you are being acquainted with can enable you, to development. It shows your contact that you esteem the presentation and it shows regard for the individual you are being acquainted with. 2. Become an asset to official scouts. Numerous administrators disregard calls from talent scouts when they are profitably utilized, just to ask why those equivalent enrollment specialists don't restore their calls when they themselves are in a pursuit. Become a partner to enrollment specialists. In the event that you are not directly for a job they are enrolling for, check whether there is somebody you realize who may be a superio r fit. Enrollment specialists will recall your activities and be bound to react in the event that you need assistance from them later on. 3. Agent quest for new employment assignments that are not their specialized topic. Fruitful administrators delegate assignments that they realize others can improve and don't want to control everything. Officials who can understand that they are not master continue scholars can employ an expert to deal with this procedure and they can believe that they are in skilled hands. 4. Practice, practice, and practice some more. Occupation searchers who accept they are incredible questioners may not be as extraordinary as they might suspect. Because you are open to conversing with individuals, doesn't mean you are conveying the correct things. Fruitful official occupation searchers set aside the effort to make their lift pitch and get ready accounts of profession achievements that will reverberate with recruiting specialists. 5. Show consideration and reg ard to everybody. Regardless of whether you are meeting for a C-suite position at an organization, everybody you meet during the procedure ought to be treated with graciousness and regard. A similar official group that talked with you may ask the secretary or clerical specialist how you acted towards them while trusting that the meeting will start. Somebody from the group might be riding up in the workplace lift simultaneously as you and offer perceptions. Be obliging to everybody, paying little mind to their situation at the organization.

10,500 Words For The Love Of The Game

10,500 WORDS FOR THE LOVE OF THE GAME Elizabeth Spann Craig, on her blog Mystery Writing is Murder (August 11, 2011) wrote: “You can often tell when someone actually loves to write down. “The writing seems animated, glowing, sharp. When I volunteer at my daughter’s elementary school, there are some tales that even really younger kids have written that simply pop off the page.” Boy, I couldn’t agree extra. Looking back over my life as a author, from second grade onward, by way of all the varied phases up through exhibiting up (near the underside, I’ll admit, however hell, I was on it) The New York Times hardcover fiction greatest sellers record, and then on to books that didn’t do as properly, then one other that did very nicely, and so forth, I even have to admit that there were occasions once I was writing for other causes than simply for the love of the sport. I’ve had some experiences, as a professional author, where each word appeared to come back from some dry, chafed place, some waste-disposal repos itory . . . each sentence was an act of self-mutilation. Well, that might be putting it somewhat strongly, but I’m a fantasy writer, man, so what the hell? I had a good time with the city fantasy novel presently making the rounds with editors, and I hope it reveals within the writing. But even more so than that, I’m having a blast with The Haunting of Dragon’s Cliff. I gave you a sneak preview of this sword and sorcery project a number of weeks in the past here, and I’m still working my means by way of the primary draft, albeit far more slowly than I like. But, Phil, you ask, if you love this book a lot, why aren’t you setting every little thing else aside to blast your method via it, loving each second you spend at the keyboard? I can provide you excuses about how I’m additionally a father of two and have to make a dwelling out here within the Great Depression II, and consulting work and freelance assignments, and so forthâ€"which I also like to do, by the best way, so this isn’t some kind of I-have-this-horrible-day-job-I-have-to-wade-via grievance, however yeah, that has so much to do with it. Mel and I are out on our personal with this one, editing one another, publishing it (finally) ourselves, and daily life like payments and kids going back to high school and my spouse beginning a new job and yadda yadda yadda interferes. And soccer season has started, and I’ve misplaced my first fantasy soccer recreation. There’s received to be an excuse in there somewhere for not ending what’s actually a novella, and one I adore, which I should have completed two months ago . . . however I can’t really consider something. Even when I love what I’m writing, I can’t seem to get again to these days the place I was only a writing machine. So like an excellent twenty first century American, I went to the internet for help. There I discovered Michael Agger’s Slate article “Slowpoke: How to be a Faster Writer” in which he supplied this recomme ndation: “Since writing is such a cognitively intense task, the key to turning into quicker is to develop methods to make writing literally less thoughts-blowing. Growing up, we all become speedier writers when our penmanship becomes computerized and we now not have to think consciously about topic-verb settlement. It’s obviously a huge help to write down a couple of subject you understand nicely. In that case, the author doesn’t need to maintain all the facts in her working memory, releasing up more consideration for planning and composing.” Writing fast is all the time something that’s haunted me, as a result of it’s never totally eluded me. I’ve gone via periods where I’m amazingly productive, however it’s been a while since I can say I was really in a kind of productive periods. In an upcoming Fantasy Author’s Handbook interview, I requested veteran author Alan Dean Foster how he can have been so prolific for so lengthy. Here’s his answer: “Discipline. Wr ite every day, even when it’s just one web page, even if it’s awful. The trick is to get from page 1 to web page 350. Once you’ve accomplished that, you'll be able to go back and repair and revise. Too many people attempt to make each web page excellent as they write it, or worse, wait for “inspiration.” The inspiration will come as you work. Write one page a day, every single day, and at the end of the 12 months, if nothing else, you’ll have written a novel.” Okay. But discipline is difficult. Still, I’m a to do list guy. I’m a Mac maniac and love the little Stickies app, which allows you to create virtual Post-Its to park in your desktop. I even have my to do record on a kind of (supplemented by Entourage) so I can see it while I’m at my desk. I love the feeling of highlighting an item and deleting it, which means I’ve done it. And I despise the sensation of highlighting it and cutting it from at present to stick into tomorrow, which suggests I’m pushing wo rk back a day. In truth, I’ve added a new to do list merchandise to Friday, which I hope will compel me to finish all hanging to do record objects for the week before I name it a day on Friday. This coming Friday will be the first of these. Let’s see how that works, particularly since one of tomorrow’s thirteen to do listing objects is: > FINISH ARRON I’ve tried to put in writing two chapters of The Haunting of Dragon’s Cliff daily, which is about 3000 phrases in all, and my to do record reflects thatâ€"or no less than it did. Now, for right now, Tuesday 9/13/eleven, I even have this merchandise: > Arron Hmm. That’s six chapters, or three days’ price, which is about 9000 phrases, and there are only 23 chapters within the outline, so I’m actually about 10,500 words out from the end line. I’ve written 10,000 words in a day before, racing a deadline, and it left me with an excellent sense of accomplishment, and a bunch of unfinished to do record gadgets. Can I do that once more? Can I establish the stuff on my to do record that completely has to be accomplished this week for me to maintain the lights on, then strip away all the additional stuffâ€"and there is some further stuff, I have to confessâ€"and get this project done? Goals should be realistic, in any case, otherwise they’re referred to as goals. But once more, I have written 10,000 phrases in a day. Again: Hmm. It all boils all the way down to this: I love scripting this story. And I need to spend at least a part of on a regular basis doing one thing I love, don’t I? Hmm. â€"Philip Athans About Philip Athans

I think the most significant fixing in the process was that Tina, as my relegated author, truly thought about doing the most ideal activity for me, he said. It took a meaningful conversation on the telephone I think for her to sh ow signs of improvement comprehension of where I had been and where I would have liked to go. On the other hand, Tina spent an extended period of time getting me to comprehend that perhaps what I felt were significant issues in my experience were possibly not what was expected to catch the eye of both the PC arranging system just as selection representatives and hirers.Tina earned my regard, both for the individual premium she took to my greatest advantage just as for her sober mindedness in making the resume a record that would have some possibility of success. In directing his business, Jones has needed to manage CEOs, deal with quarreling ancestral and rebel pioneers, and even hit manages nearby road merchants to pick up settlement for his activities. HR Learning From Healthcare - Workology

HR Learning From Healthcare - Workology HR Learning From Healthcare Recently my wife had surgery.   This gave me occasion to hang around a hospital for days at a time. While my intent was to be there to attend to any of my wife’s needs. I could not help but be an ardent observer of all of what I saw going on there. I was intrigued by their processes and procedure and could not help but notice the repeated effort to, and technology used, to ensure there were no errors. HR Learning From Healthcare I don’t work or travel in medical circles so I really don’t know what goes on or what is in the forefront of this space currently.   As I suspect, most of our PICHR readers don’t either, as we are predominately died in the wool HR folks.   I work in the manufacturing segment, and for many years, as a community we have been working on different aspects of the Six Sigma concept.   And even within that process, a goal of 99.99966% is the target, not the 100% or zero defects target which the medical community aspires to reach. I understand that if a product has a defect and a consumer has to return it to the retailer, that does not have the same effect as that of a faulty hip replacement, or some other medical device, but as long as we continue to view our work product in that light will we ever get to the next level? After arriving at the hospital the day of the surgery, my wife was asked by 8 different people (that I heard) what her name was, what her date of birth was and what procedure she was having performed. Along the way, 5 of those 8 people also scanned the bar code on her bracelet as a method of inputting data, but it also assured that they had the correct person for the correct procedure.   The last step of this confirmation process was to physically write on my wife’s back L5-S1 (the area of the surgery). I wrote this and initialed it. Then when the surgeon came to see her before the surgery, he initialed this and wrote on her back the medicines that would cause an allergic reaction for her. They were going to get this right- without question! While she was in surgery they used text message to communicate with me about her status. This isn’t such an epiphany but nonetheless a very nice touch. Later back in her room, I continued the observation processes. There were two things I continued to be taken with and they were pretty simple.   Each time there was an interaction with the patient, it would be logged into their computer system.   An employee ID badge was used to logon (no key strokes or passwords).   Then to access the patient file and record data the care givers were required to use a scanner and scan my wifes bracelet, again to ensure accuracy. There are many more things I took away from this experience, but that is all I will put on you now.   Here is my point to all of this.  Do you give your work in HR this level of importance â€" are you positive that everything you do is correct?   Do you have processes and policies in place to ensure this?    Do you or your department check, and re-check more than once, do you audit your systems or are you adding technology to ensure accuracy. Or do you subscribe to the, aw shucks it’s just Human Resources and maybe some payroll mentality, if it’s not right we can fix it next week or at the next review, right? If you agree, I think you might want to contemplate a few items such as employee safety, taxes, data security or building security. You may not have a second chance to get it right.    Let’s learn from our friends in the medical community and get it right the first time and every time. P.S. As a side note, my wife is doing fine and got some really fantastic care on the fourth floor in the Neurological Wing at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL.

Insights to Help You Create a Better Job Search Strategy

Bits of knowledge to Help You Create a Better Job Search Strategy CareerXroads 2012 Source of Hire review results are out! This yearly review has been running for longer than 10 years and gives a rundown of how organizations have filled their open situations in the previous year. 2012 CareerXroads Source of Hire: Channels of Influence View more PowerPoint from CareerXroads Outer Hires UP .5% The extraordinary news is that outside employing is UP. In earlier years this number has been a lot littler (27.5% in 2010 and 26.7% in 2009) because of the flimsy economy. Most recruiting in the previous years originated from inside sources. Shouldn't something be said about the Little Guys? There is an imperfection with this investigation, in my opinion. Only huge organizations were studied each with 1,500 to 10,000+ North American representatives. My impulses reveal to me that reviewing the littler organizations (with littler financial plans) would reveal an alternate insight into recruiting practices. I am additionally a tremendous backer for the little guys. I accept, similar to other people, that the achievement of our economy in the short term is going to originate from littler companies. They are deft, for the most part increasingly inventive and can get item/administration to showcase quicker and less expensive than the bohemiths. Are Job Boards Really Alive and Well? As indicated by the organizations studied, yes. 20.1% of their outside recently recruited employees acknowledged the activity sheets for their securing the position posting. Your take-awayif you arent looking Indeed, you are passing up on chances! The Other Sources of Hire snap to see bigger 9.8%Career Site 9.1% Recruiter started 6.6% College 4.3% Rehires 3.5% Social Media also, Ill stop there. Add these to your pursuit technique: Start discussions with enrollment specialists geologically and by industry specialty. Contact your school and see what administrations they give Watch out for your past bosses profession destinations Furthermore, hop via web-based networking media, above all LinkedIn Is Social Media a Source? It is getting progressively hard to credit a solitary wellspring of recruit. All things considered, it generally had been pretty complicated. When you think about all the various ways work lead can be shared: word of mouth, email, interpersonal organizations, and so forth. Who should get the credit? This years study takes a gander at how various channels impact the activities of occupation seekers. Social media may not be an immediate wellspring of recruit, notwithstanding, it is absolutely a solid influencer. Occupation sheets were affected 44% by online networking. Referrals were affected 40% by online life Boomerangs (which means individuals who had just been working for that organization) were just marginally affected (21.9%) by online networking. Your take awayif you arent utilizing internet based life, it might take you longer to get some answers concerning employments or you may miss them all together. LinkedIn is the enormous Winner for Companies LinkedIn is of critical advantage to spotters looking through competitors as should be obvious from this image. Facebook and Twitter dont even position as having broad effect by any means, that is, as indicated by these huge businesses, right now. Organizations appear to feel that their organization pages additionally have to some degree a broad reach. What the Experts Are Saying About CareerXroads study In John Zappes post on SourceCon, he cites Gerry Crispin of CareerXroads: says Crispin, offering this situation: A vocation searcher goes to a vocation board and sees an occupation at an organization where they past worked. Presently the activity board has alarmed someone who used to work there. They go to the organization site, since that is the place the posting sends them. In any case, they call a companion who despite everything works there, and the companion makes a referral, on the grounds that the organization pays a reward. The wellspring of recruit gets recorded as 'referral.' And afterward there is this diverting, yet quite obvious, representation of a genuine wellspring of recruit situation in Lance Hauns post on SourceCon. Leave a remark and let me realize what your detailed as the wellspring of how you got some answers concerning your last occupation!

That way, when you have to really go on a meeting, you'll be set up for any peculiar inquiries addresses tossed your direction. Update your resume. You may have a conventional (read: more established) rendition of your resume that employing directors no longer need to peruse (or more regrettable, lies on your resume). Having a non-refreshed resume likewise warns a potential manager as to how old you are roughly, however to what extent it's been since you've been in the activity showcase. Both of these can mean something negative for you, so get familiar with the present resume styles and adjust yours in like manner. Continue organizing. These connections can transform into kinships (and vital associations) that will help you later on when you truly need to search for another position. Obviously, the objective of each activity searcher is to get a new line of work that they adore and escape the futile daily existence of searching for a vocation. At the point when you do get employed, you can unwind and celebrate for a piece, yet be constantly keeping watch for the following association or occupation lead. The additional work that you do as a consistent activity searcher while you're utilized may spare you time, vitality, and indeed, cash, when you do require a new position later on. QA I Want to Get More Active on LinkedIn How Do I Start

QA I Want to Get More Active on LinkedIn  How Do I Start I started to casually explore the site and build my network.   I shared my first post in August 2012. I know this because I have downloaded my complete LinkedIn archive.   That first share was a bit daunting. It didnt get any engagement but that didnt stop me. Less than a week later I posted again and it got a few likes, even a comment from a fellow career pro. I continued to post and havent looked back. The benefits of my consistent engagement over the years?   Too numerous to list them all, but LinkedIn has introduced me to a community near and far. It has opened doors and delivered opportunities. It has helped me grow my business and connected me with so many amazing people. Three notable results: I was approached by LinkedIn back in 2013 to work for the site as a contractor. I remember thinking: who me?! Ive been named one of the top job search experts to follow on LinkedIn by Jobscan for 3 years straight. Finally, I met my Job Search Secret Weapon teammates on LinkedIn long before we ever met in person. My results are not unique. Many people reap the rewards of LinkedIn and secure great new jobs or opportunities because of their site activity. If you can relate, Id love to hear about the wins you achieved from being active on LinkedIn. Share your experience in the comments below! LinkedIn Engagement Reminders A few final tips to keep top of mind. Be consistent on LinkedIn. Regular activity and engagement are critical. If getting active seems overwhelming, break down actions into smaller steps:  Start with just 10 minutes. Visit the site, read through your feed, and like or comment on 1 or 2 posts of interest. Graduate engagement by starting to share thought leadership. This can be on other peoples posts (which is a great start) or by compiling and sharing posts of your own. Stay fresh. Your recent activity shows right on your profile, like a freshness stamp. If you haven’t engaged for some time your profile is going to say so to people who visit it, making you look stale and disengaged. Connect with people of interest. Research and engage with potential decision-makers, recruiters, or people who could potentially support your job search. Just remember to build relationships before making asks. Be personable, yet professional. Your comments and shares could be seen by a lot of people, including prospective employers. Strive to make a good impression. How to Prepare for Your Next Big Career Opportunity

The most effective method to Prepare for Your Next Big Career Opportunity As of late, I talked at a ladies' occasion at a worldwide venture bank on the best way to effectively explore the way to advancement. Toward the finish of my discussion, I was posed the accompanying inquiry: Eventually, more ladies will be offered chances to lead organizations at the firm. What would it be advisable for us to do to get ready for the spotlight? What a wonderful inquiry. It's not one I had been asked previously. Eventually in your vocation, you will have that large break â€" that chance to step up and step into your maximum capacity by and by and expertly. At the point when that opportunity arrives, you'll need to be prepared. While there are presumably 100 things you could do to set up, it's tied in with concentrating on the little bunch of things that will have the greatest effect. In my view, there are three. Fabricate your emotionally supportive network The main activity is begin to construct your emotionally supportive network. This is particularly significant in case you're being placed in a weight circumstance where individuals are watching to see whether you'll succeed or fizzle. It resembles being on the flying trapeze with observers watching and pausing, and thinking about whether you'll make it securely to the opposite side. Be that as it may, nobody's holding a net to get you on the off chance that you fall. Thus, you need to make your own security net. The size of your emotionally supportive network is less significant than its constancy. Worry don't as well on the off chance that you start little. Simply ensure it's vigorous. Fabricate associations with individuals you can confide in both remotely, for example, loved ones, and inside, similar to your coaches, support and a couple of close partners. You'll require these believed consultants and supporters to assist you with getting around deterrents and prop you up in the troublesome minutes, so you can return to work the following day and gain forward ground. For me, it started with my significant other, sister and guardians. At that point my office-mate Liz, my kindred examiner Ross, and my previous chief, Madeleine. We're still companions right up 'til today. So recognize who you can depend on and for what sort of help. You'll require companions in both high and low places. What's more, much the same as in the entertainment biz, it's frequently the individuals who were your companions before you became rich and well known whose thought processes you can trust. The size of your emotionally supportive network is less significant than its steadfastness. Close your abilities holes At the point when you take on another job, there's probably going to be new qualities and abilities that you'll have to bring to hold up under. Make sense of which a couple are simply the most significant for you to create yourself and begin taking a shot at them. For me, it was figuring out how to oversee individuals. I was a micromanager of the most exceedingly terrible kind, so I realized I would need to begin rehearsing how to designate. Indeed, even in the kitchen, I demanded cooking in spite of my 14-hour a normal everyday employment. It was insane. I needed to figure out how to give up in light of the fact that I could never succeed in the event that I attempted to do a much greater activity all alone. It's valuable to make sense of your Achilles Heel before you get to the following level up in force and examination. What holes do you have to fill? Also, how might you begin assembling those new muscles now? Get clear on what your identity is At the point when you're pushed into the spotlight, it's anything but difficult to get pounded around by the weights and headwinds surrounding you. At those occasions, you'll value knowing what your identity is and a big motivator for you. So this is an extraordinary time to get clear on your qualities. What's alright and not alright in your book? Where do you adhere to a meaningful boundary on choosing which dangers to take and what conduct to endure? In what manner will you handle individuals who oppose this idea? How would you like to practice your voice in supporting your convictions? The more senior you become, the more you will be tried. This is the place your fearlessness and qualities should be your bedrock and compass. Individuals will push you, once in a while just to perceive how far you can be pushed. My qualities originated from the accounts my folks educated me regarding my progenitors. There was the narrative of my granddad who never at any point took a paper cut from his office since it had a place with the college (he was the President). Furthermore, my extraordinary granddad who was killed on the grounds that he sentenced the crooks who spoke to the manikin government who were running China at that point (he was an adjudicator). Having the benefit of making the best choice imbued into us helped me hold my ground and explore some dubious circumstances. At the point when you have lucidity on what your identity is and what you have confidence in, the additional advantage is self-assurance. What's more, that is useful to each profession. At the point when you have lucidity on what your identity is and what you have faith in, the additional advantage is self-assurance. Will you be prepared? It's dependent upon you to prepare sure you're the point at which that next enormous open door shows up. Furthermore, that implies accomplishing the work to set yourself up. Regardless of whether it's structure your emotionally supportive network, shutting your abilities holes, getting clear on what your identity is, or something different, the time you spend putting resources into your capacities is rarely squandered. What's more, presently, it's an ideal opportunity to feel free to put resources into yourself. Which of these regions would most move the needle for you as you get ready for the spotlight? Leave a remark and let me know.

5 Interview Questions That Will Show If Your Candidate is a Good Manager

5 Interview Questions That Will Show If Your Candidate is a Good Manager One of the most important parts of the recruitment process is to ask the right questions at an interview. Rather than sticking to the standard interview questions which you will get standard answers to, take some time to think about what you want from your manager. What kind of person do you want them to be and do you need the to be a big thinker? Think about what the priorities are in your company. Then tailor your questions to the specific role. 5 ideas are listed below to get you started.  1)  How would you deal with an employee who was  under-performing?     You do not want a candidate to tell you how they will discipline the employee and how tough they will be. You need a constructive and positive response from this question. You want to get a sense that the candidate can see that the situation may not be that black and white. That everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Maybe this employee has been poorly matched to a role. The candidate should express that they have observed and interacted enough with the employee to know if they are a hard worker and if their skills lie elsewhere. Maybe the answer is to review the role and change the responsibilities of the individual. This will not only make the employee happier it will also improve work rate and quality. You will also want a response to this question which will show the candidate will think through a situation thoroughly and display high quality communication skills to work through a problem with an employee. They must pin point problems and solutions, exploring an employees positives and negatives and finding out exactly how they feel and if there are issues.  2)  Simple pre interview tests: Exchange a fair amount of correspondence with them before their interview. You can in this way test their professionalism, response time, telephone manner and command of the English language. You can get a good insight in this way into how they work. You may also wish to set them some sort of writing task that is based around the company’s activities to test their enthusiasm, writing skills and attention to detail. You could ask them to email something over within an agreed timescale. No matter what type of company you work for, checking these basics will help a manager command authority.  3)  How do you ensure all work is carried out correctly and to the highest standard? This question should help you to see if your manager is a control freak and if they know when to delegate. A good answer would be to build up relationships and trust with co-workers so a manager has full knowledge of their abilities and strengths. When they first start the job one approach would be to check some of their work and take an interest in what they are doing. They should then be able to teach employees how jobs should be done and how to improve. They will then know at an early stage if further checks are required. This question may also give you an idea as to if the candidate will be good at delegation. If a candidate says they would check every single piece of work on an ongoing basis, you know they are not going to be utilising all of their skills and not building good relationships.  4)  What do you think makes a good manager? With this question, you want to hear that the candidate understands the need to be firm when required and the need to command respect, but also to be approachable. You want to know that the candidate has the confidence to call people up when they are in the wrong, and to be taken seriously but also be someone that will want to guide others to be the best that they can be and inspire them to want to make the company better. A good manager is someone who takes an interest in all their workers and takes the time and effort to communicate with them all effectively to help them discover their strengths and weaknesses and utilise these effectively. 5)  What are your interests? A simple and unoriginal question, but you can use this to see how your candidate makes conversation and how they interact with you. You can try and envisage if this is someone others will relate to and if they will fit in easily in any team. This question gives your candidate the option to let their guard down a bit and relax. You can use this to make a better overall assessment.  Article written by www.marblehillpartners.com.

5 Things You Should Consider Before a Video Interview

5 Things You Should Consider Before a Video Interview Being interviewed for a position can be an intimidating experience, but the increasing trend for video recruitment means there’s a whole new set of factors to take into account. If you’re not used to being on camera, giving a video interview may be nerve-wracking, but it has a number of benefits for both you and your potential employer. Easier to arrange and more convenient for all parties to attend, particularly if they live some distance apart, video interviews are growing in popularity. Although many of the golden rules remain unchanged, there’s a new set of challenges and potential problems which need to be considered. Here are just 5 of the things that you should always consider when you’re being interviewed by video. 1) Using headsets Regardless of whether the role you are being interviewed for involves public speaking, your voice is a powerful tool in persuading the individual to hire you. Clear, concise diction, with an agreeable tone will be a pleasure to listen to and can help the interviewer to pay close attention to what you are saying. Unfortunately the microphone on your computer may make you sound tinny, quiet and add a strange timbre to your tone. This is less than ideal and could influence your interviewer’s desire to listen to your answers. The other problem with computer microphones is that they pick up every other noise in the room, adding a soundtrack that you would rather not include. Whether it’s other people moving around, pets, noise pollution or other sounds, it can be a real distraction during the interview. The best way to get round this is to eschew the computer microphone and instead use a headset. This will eliminate all other noises and ensure that your answers are conveyed clearly and that your voice has the opportunity to influence the interviewer as you hoped. The other benefit to using headsets is that you will instantly appear more composed, professional and organised, rather than giving the impression that everything was put together in a rush. 2) Your user name When you’re applying for jobs, you might think nothing about handing about your email address and user name, happy to rely on more modern means to secure a position. But if your accounts were set up originally for non-professional purposes, don’t forget to consider the type of reaction that your name could provoke. Ideally you’ll want a user name or address which is your regular name, but this might not always be possible. However, having something which is rude, offensive or just unprofessional will create an instant opinion which isn’t favourable. If your existing account isn’t suitable for use with a prospective employer, consider either changing the name or setting up a brand new one for the purposes of recruitment. 3) Screen sharing A lot depends on the job that you’re applying for but there may be the opportunity for you and the interviewer to screen share, so that you can demonstrate some practical skills. This can be the perfect opportunity to showcase what you really know but make sure you’re aware of everything that they can see. This means that if you’ve been googling to check facts that you claimed to already know, you could blow your chances of getting a job. Having other chat windows open is also an extremely bad idea, even if you haven’t been using them during the interview. There’s always the chance that a friend or acquaintance could pop up and make a derogatory comment or remark during the interview. 4) Transmission delay There’s nothing worse than mistiming your comments and either sat listening to a stony silence or constantly talking over the person who is trying to interview you. It’s especially important to demonstrate an ease with technology if the role could potentially involve the use of computers or modern methods of communication, such as video conferencing or Skype. There’s a real art to conversing over video, and it’s not as easy as having a physical face to face discussion. You’ll need to take account of the lags or delays that the transmission might cause and ensure that you match the rhythm of your conversation to this. 5) Picture quality and position Unlike a physical interview, you’ll have to put much more work into creating the right position when you’re being videoed. Rather than simply pulling up a chair at an interview table, over video it’s up to you to create the right position which is neither too close nor too far. Don’t forget to check the results before you go live, so you can see the view that the other party will see. You shouldn’t be higher than them, looking down can make you appear arrogant and superior. By direct contrast, position your chair too low and you’ll give the impression of being meek, mild and subservient. Once you’re sure that you’ve got the position right, do a final check for any blurs, smudges or marks on the lens. This can be very distracting for the interviewer and may mean that you come across as less than professional as a result.
